Biggest LPG tank in caravelle

Postby Zebedee » 04 May 2010, 17:45

Whats the biggest size LPG tank you can fit under the back seat of a caravelle GL?
I know the rear heater needs removing to clear a space.

70 ltr cylinder (1100mm x 300mm diameter and a 345mm headroom) most common application

there is a 100 ltr cylinder (1460mm x 315mm diameter and a 360mm headroom) but I don't know if it would fit under the seat

I have a 100l in my panel-van camper conversion, not sure if the space there in a velle would take that though. Its a Stako tank.

The largest cylinder I've ever seen was a 240 ltr Steve fitted in a petrol T4 Caravelle ... looked like the atomic bomb it were that big. The owner made units around the lardy-asre thing

way back when (2000) I had a tank made to fit under a std caravelle rear bench to max the available space without lifting the seat.. it holds 76L of gas at the legal 80%........ I wrote the LPG feature in VW camper and commercial mag, pics in there of it..

There was quite a bit of interest in them after I did it and so I had a batch of 4 made... (1 pre order) it took more than a year sell the other 3.. wont be doing that again...

I've got the SA booked into Gasure for next month and I'd like a bigger tank than the 55litre under-bench one that's the stock option. The rock and roller is exactly the same as in a Caravelle, same height, front board is about 260/270mm high (forget the high engine lid, it makes no difference (no matress over the engine)
70 litres would go some way to getting decent range on one fill without the extra payload of a second tank. My nearest LPG is only 3 miles from home and ideal for the weekend's school run total of 300 miles...I need more than 10 gallon's worth even if I drive it all at 65 mph.
So is there the space to cram in a tank that big - the term "headroom" isn't well explained :?
Seems a bit odd not to offer a tank that uses all the width available when you have to ditch the auxiliary heater (when fitted) anyway.

From what i can work out 'headroom' is the minumum space needed to install the tank. Even though the tank is say 244mm diameter the mounting frame and all the plumbing gizmos add a bit to the size so 289mm headroom is stated. Thats what i assume it means.

I wonder if two smaller length tanks could be fitted, one either side of the rear heater?

Has been done, but the capacity is disappointing according to Gasure (too much lost volume with the ends of the tanks and clearances etc)

I looked at twin tanks and it was pointless for the cost.. thats why I had mine made inthe end.. didnt cost a whole lot more at the time.. but off the shelf tanks are cheaper now..

I have a Stako 100l tank in my Caravelle GL. Replaced the back seat with a Bluebird Customs RocknRoll bed which will not fit over it. The tank is the same height as the bulkhead (from memory 14") so the bed is mounted higher than normal to go over the tank. The means the seat is raised higher as well, which makes people sitting in the back feel like kids as their feet don't touch the floor!
